This month we would like to highlight our Volunteer of Year, Maria Bush. Maria was awarded this honor at our Volunteer Appreciation and Ice Cream Social on October 19 at Yanaguana Gardens at Hemisfair.
Maria first became involved with SAYL as a Reading Buddy through her church, First Unitarian Universalist Church, three years ago. Since then, she has been instrumental in coordinating efforts at her church, including arranging Reading Buddy trainings, opportunities for information sessions, and even nominating SAYL to receive funds from the church.
In addition to serving as a Reading Buddy, Maria also jumped at the opportunity to help our Book Buddy Initiative. Book Buddy Coordinator Jane Welch noted, “Maria has been one of the main reasons for Book Buddies’ success in the last couple of years. She has participated in countless sorting and boxing sessions, recruited others to help, some of whom have become regular volunteers themselves, and organized book drives at her church. She has been a fixture at our book giveaway events, helping children select the books they want. This year she stepped up and volunteered to coordinate all volunteer efforts for the organization, including keeping volunteer records, supervising and assisting book sorting and boxing efforts, and weighing in on matters of policy and development. Maria is truly a volunteer’s volunteer. Book Buddies is grateful to have her.”
Maria has gone above and beyond the call for SAYL. She puts in countless hours to help ensure the children in San Antonio read to succeed and become life-long readers. Thank you so much, Maria for all you do for SAYL and the children of our city.
