Volunteer Spotlight – April 2018

This month we would like to honor Jessica Nelson and Leslie Chasnoff as our Reading Buddies of the Month! Jessica and Leslie have been wonderful Reading Buddies and mentors this school year at Bowden Elementary in SAISD. This is Jessica’s forth year as a Reading Buddy and Leslie’s second year volunteering with SAYL. The two learned about the program through our partnership with the San Antonio Museum of Art where Jessica serves as the Teacher and School Programs Manager and Leslie is the Museum’s Public Programs Manager.

These two incredible ladies have done an amazing job creating a great bond with their students and have seen improvement throughout the year. “Over the year I see the students improving. Seeing that is very rewarding, knowing you’ve made a difference,” stated Nelson. “With one student this year, we’ve noticed a difference in not just his reading but his behavior with us. He seems so excited to be there, it doesn’t take much to ask him to do things. Even seeing that kind of improvement and how they warm up to you – they are really enjoying it too and look forward to it, is rewarding,” added Chasnoff.

In addition to being awesome volunteers, they have fun doing it! “It’s one of those volunteer programs that doesn’t feel like work at all, remarked Chasnoff. “It is really fun!”

We would also like to recognize them on completing 20 sessions so far this school year! SAYL thanks you so much for your time and support to our program and your students. We couldn’t do it without you!
