Sight words are those high frequency words that readers learn to recognize automatically over time. It’s important for emerging readers to develop their sight word vocabulary because they will be able to read more fluently, and they will be able to use those known words to help figure out new words they encounter. Many sight words have to be memorized because they are not phonetically regular, and therefore cannot be sounded out e.g. “you” or “there.” This resource gives a multiple step process you can use to teach your students a new sight word or practice a sight word they have difficulty with.
