Our spotlight school of the month is Northern Hills Elementary in NEISD, and our Site Director Ms. Beth Fouse. The second grade team and Ms. Fouse have been absolutely amazing and supportive of SAYL and the Reading Buddy Program. “Our teachers and administrators love having the SAYL program,” Fouse said. “We know it is the combination of good instruction and our partnership with SAYL that contribute to [success],” she added. Many volunteers at Northern Hills have already commented on the impact they believe the program is having. “The comments I hear the most include those items that aren’t easily measured – increased confidence in reading, increased participation in class,” Fouse said.
Ms. Fouse is appreciative of everything the Reading Buddy Program offers, especially the personal instruction that volunteers are able to give the students. “My favorite thing about SAYL is that it is one-on-one support and mentoring for a struggling student,” Fouse said. “Having that one-on-one support is so important because many of our students do not have any reading support at home,” she added. Ms. Fouse believes the additional support and guidance students receive through the Reading Buddy Program makes a difference. “The SAYL program gives them that extra support and encouragement they need. Sometimes that is all it takes for their reading to finally take off,” Fouse said.
Ms. Fouse has gone over the top in being attentive and supportive of the volunteers. She is always there making sure volunteers have everything they need, from advice to materials, for their students. She is clearly a strong believer in literacy. We are extremely grateful for Ms. Fouse and her team at Northern Hills. Thank you all for your support and effort!
