Hooked on Books Scholarship Breakfast

SAYL's annual Hooked on Books Scholarship Breakfast will take place Tuesday, September 20, 2011, 7:30 a.m. at the Plaza Club. This year's guest speakers, State Representative Mike Villarreal and wife Jeanne Russell,  Assistant to Mayor - Education, will talk about a book that has influenced them in their lives.

Each year, the SAYL Scholarship Breakfast awards one area college student the Harriet Marmon Helmle Reading Tutor Scholarship, in honor of SAYL's founder Harriet Marmon Helmle. The $2,500 scholarship is awarded to a student who has shown impeccable scholastic achievement along with a commitment to community service.

Corporate Tables and Individual Tickets are available. Proceeds from the breakfast benefit SAYL's "Let's Read!" program and the Harriet Marmon Helmle Reading Tutor Scholarship. Please call the SAYL office at 210-299-1533 for tickets and more information.

Special Screening of Biblioburro: The Donkey Library, Saturday August 13

Come join SAYL for a special outdoor screening of the documentary, Biblioburro: The Donkey Library, at Main Plaza on Saturday, August 13, 8:30 p.m.

Biblioburro: The Donkey Library is an inspiring documentary about a Colombian librarian who travels the poor and violence-ridden countryside to bring books to the children who need them. Both heartwarming and inspirational, this documentary highlights the profound importance of literacy, the power of determination, and the spirit of community service.

The documentary screening will serve as a conclusion for the Main Plaza Conservancy’s LET’S READ: Back to School Fest, which will feature free school supplies, live music by San Antonio youth groups, and much more! Drop by Main Plaza from 10 AM to 3 PM for some fun!

This event is held in collaboration with the award-winning documentary series POV (www.pbs.org/pov) and the Main Plaza Conservancy.

SA Reads

With the help of Literacy San Antonio and Rotary International, the new SA Reads Initiative will help scale SAYL's "Let's Read!" program to provide Volunteer Reading Tutors to every second grader identified by the schools in every school system in San Antonio and Bexar County by the 2013-2014 school year. This community wide effort is being coordinated by Literacy San Antonio, Rotary International District 5840, and San Antonio Youth Literacy, with the support of the City of San Antonio.

Starting with the upcoming 2011-2012 school year, SA Reads will be in every school within East Central ISD, Edgewood ISD, Harlandale ISD, San Antonio ISD, and Southwest ISD. Year two will add all the Northeast ISD, Northside ISD, and South San ISD schools, and year three will encompass the remainder of the Bexar County school districts and their elementary schools.

Of course SAYL, Literacy SA and Rotary International can not do this alone! With the plan to increase SAYL's current "Let's Read!" program from our current 38 sites to over 100 sites this coming school year we need your help! Sign up to become a Volunteer Reading Tutor, donate to the cause, or volunteer behind the scenes to help with this great initiative! To find out more on how you can help visit www.sareads.org (coming this summer) or call the SAYL Office at 210-299-1533.

Together, we can help all our second graders become reading champions!

San Antonio Area Foundation Awards SAYL Funding

Through out the year, San Antonio Youth Literacy submits grant proposals to area foundations seeking support for our program. We are very happy to announce that thus far we have received financial support from the Zachry Foundation, the JP Morgan Chase Foundation, and the Alex and Sally Halff Family Foundation, and most recently from the San Antonio Area Foundation. All have made generous gifts to our organization to support our "Let's Read!" program. Thank you!
