Executive Director’s Note – January 2018

“And will you succeed?
Yes! You will, indeed!

Oh, The Places You’ll Go, by Dr. Seuss

DeborahWell, Happy New Year!! Every year, like many of you, I make resolutions to address all those areas of my life that I think need addressing…the proverbial exercise/weight resolution, the being more optimistic resolution, the being more punctual resolution, etc. etc. etc. And, once again, I have resolved to keep my resolutions. But I can tell you that one resolution we here at San Antonio Youth Literacy made in 2017, to continue helping San Antonio children become life-long readers, was kept. How were we able to accomplish our resolution? Well, during the year, we were excited to bring on a huge contingent of Valero associates as Reading Buddies for the students of Carnahan Elementary School in Northside ISD. The partnership has grown to include the Valero Vanguard, retirees of Valero, and, because of the overwhelming response, we have been able to extend our services to Boon Elementary School. In addition, we benefited from the expertise of the City of San Antonio’s Faith-Based Initiative on community involvement and are moving forward with this project through the Literacy Task Force. We have high hopes for the outcomes of this task force to exponentially increase the number of Reading Buddies at our partner schools. Finally, our corporate and private partners were there for us. One of those corporate supporters, CPS Energy, continues to be an incredible partner, validating their belief in our program through their volunteers and funds.

So, for 2018, what are SAYL’s resolutions? We are resolved to continue to be data driven, examining student outcomes to assure that we are providing a program curriculum that is relevant to the children we are serving. We are resolved to recruit Reading Buddies in record numbers so that we may reach more students across San Antonio. We are resolved to make this new year one in which more children enter 3rd grade reading on grade level.

“And will (we) you succeed?  Yes! (We) you will, indeed! (98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed).” Help us with our resolutions, go to SAYL.org and sign up to be a Reading Buddy or, if time doesn’t permit, consider making a donation. “KID, YOU’LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!”

In partnership,

Deborah Valdez, Executive Director
