Like everyone else, the Book Buddy team is taking a little breather to enjoy the holiday season. We have no sorting sessions scheduled until after the first of the year. But then — Watch Out! We will need Book Buddies volunteers in full force.
Through the company Better World Books (motto: “Sell a book, give a book”), we have been granted 22 Gaylords (really, really huge boxes) of children’s books to be delivered the week after the New Year. That is thirty to forty THOUSAND books! This is a huge bonanza for Book Buddies and the children we serve in Title I schools. We should be able to double or triple our output over last year.
But we still need you! Please be ready to sign up to help sort and box these books when we send out the appeal. If you are not on Book Buddies’ mailing list, please get on it by emailing email@example.com You’ll get notices of volunteering events and updates on our progress.
This gift from Better World Books doesn’t satisfy the need for books in at-risk schools, though. We need every children’s book we can gather. So please keep organizing those book drives in your neighborhood, workplace, social organization, sports team, etc. Keep making new book owners and growing those home libraries!
IN OTHER NEWS
Special thanks this month to Aventine Hill Partners, who have again done a fantastically successful book drive, bringing in over 700 books! We needed two vehicles to haul all the boxes to Book Buddies, where they will be sorted at the next volunteer session.
And again this year, Pat Johnson’s two book clubs did a drive for us, yielding several boxes of great children’s books — a terrific way to make new readers.
As always, Half Price Books has been great to Book Buddies with a number of big boxes of children’s books donated.
Many thanks to the Reagan High School Honor Society, who came for the second time in a month to sort and box up books. They were so dynamic that they cleared away all the unsorted books — until the new donations came in.
Happy Holidays from Book Buddies! And a book-filled New Year!
