Book Buddies have been busy collecting books for the book celebrations in May. Tara Lindow at Southside ISD has 764 books waiting to be picked up. She says the box is “crazy big”—no kidding! Volunteers will be arriving soon with several boxes to transport this great haul to Book Buddies headquarters. A group called Give More Hugs is also hosting a drive and will be helping to sort books where they will write notes to the books’ recipients and sort all their books. Leader Amir Samandi says they are very excited about their partnership with Book Buddies.
Again this year we have been chosen by Cheer America as the beneficiary of their championship competition here in San Antonio. As some of you will remember from last year, Cheer America chooses one non-profit to receive the proceeds from their raffle at each championship city. They had so much positive response for Book Buddies last year, they have asked us to participate again this year! It’s an honor and a great opportunity for us.
Families coming to support the competitors are asked to bring books, and last year we collected many boxes as well as a substantial amount in cash donations. This was all in addition to the money we received from the two raffles held at the event! While Book Buddies runs pretty lean, we do need money for supplies and other expenses, and the money raised from Cheer America attendees was a big help.
As the spring semester continues, we will forward more information about spring book drives and volunteer opportunities through Book Buddies. Remember all those little kids who need books this school year.
